Here are a few of the criminal law stories that occurred around the state of Alabama this past week:
- A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted a 46-year-old man on 10 felony counts after he “eluded lawmen for seven hours, carried out a home invasion and fired at officers three separate times before he was shot and wounded” in the summer of 2016 in Fultondale. Alvin Roy Jacobs has been convicted seven times prior for felonies and misdemeanors such as criminal trespassing, felony escape and second-degree assault. This time, he faces six counts of attempted murder, and one count each of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary and drug possession.
- A popular Warrior Speed Mart has allegedly been a hotbed for drug trafficking. Authorities booked four people into the Jefferson County Jail after conducting simultaneous raids on the convenience store and the owner’s home. The group faces a variety of misdemeanor and felony charges, including 28-year-old Khang Dang Nguyen who had a prior drug trafficking conviction in Tuscaloosa. This time around, he is also facing a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
- On March 10th, a Jefferson County grand jury returned indictments for five men accused of unrelated slayings in Jefferson County during 2016. The shootings occurred in Birmingham area locations such as Kimberly and Tarrant as well as the city of Birmingham. The suspects range in age from 41 to 19 with several of the men having prior convictions for murder or attempted murder.
