Here are a few of the criminal law stories that have recently occurred around the state of Alabama:
- A 16-year-old Rainbow City male robbed a Minitman gas station in Boaz at gunpoint last Friday night. According to police, the suspect, Rickey Ethan Powell, claimed he held up the store as part of a gang initiation but did not comment with further details. Surveillance footage shared on the Boaz Police Department’s Facebook page showed Powell walking into the store, going to the bathroom and grabbing two bags of Cheetos. After placing the snacks on the counter and the clerk told him the total, Powell pulled out his gun and demanded from the drawer. After grabbing a handful of cash, Powell fled. With over 250,000 views of the video as well as numerous shares, the department was able to apprehend Powell and the weapon late Tuesday night. He has been charged with felony first-degree robbery and a misdemeanor theft. His bail is set at $100,000 and he is being held in Marshall County Jail.
- On December 28th, three agencies (the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, the Jasper Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency) took over two dozen people into custody on a variety of drug-related charges. The suspects, whose ages ranged from 18 to 55, were charged with either distribution of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to appear, criminal trespass, domestic violence, theft of property or assault. The agencies are still on the lookout for 12 other suspects.
- Around midnight on Monday, shots rang out during a New Year’s Eve party at the Palladium Event Center in northwest Huntsville. The shooting left four victims hospitalized. Police are currently looking for suspects and information on the incident. As of Monday, two victims were in serious condition and the other two were in stable condition.
