Here are a few of the criminal law stories that occurred around the state of Alabama this past week:
- Police recently took eight people into custody (five in Lamar County, three in Marion County) who aided in the escape of two Marion County jail inmates. Cory Dean, 22, was being held on seven burglary charges, criminal mischief, arson, and discharging firearm into unoccupied dwelling charges. Zeppelin Kennedy, 20, had been charged with 31 counts of possession of pornography and production of pornography with a minor. Those arrested in Lamar County who aided the inmates faces charges of hindering apprehension of the escapees while those arrested in Marion County face charges of hindering prosecution. Kennedy was captured on Tuesday afternoon with his grandmother now facing charges of aiding and abetting. Dean is still on the run.
- Speaking of grandmothers, a Florence woman has been arrested on 136 charges associated with $15,000 she stole from her 83-year-old grandmother. Out of the triple digit charges, 131 were for fraudulent use of a credit card and the other five included first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly, identity theft, first-degree theft, criminal possession of a forged instrument and third-degree theft. The suspect had already been arrested last month for illegally stealing her grandmother’s car. This time around, she turned herself in.
- This past Tuesday, a musician was packing up his gear after a show in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham. He was approached by a black male, who attempted to rob and then ultimately shot the victim multiple times. According to friends, the victim “underwent surgeries Wednesday and Thursday to repair his liver, kidneys and bowels.” Police are currently searching for the suspect.
